How to Make Castile Hand Soap

Authentic castile soap is created with pure 100 percent olive oil. Castile soap received its name from the Spanish region of Castilia, where castile soap originated. Castile soap is traditionally a mild, white soap that lathers into rich, abundant bubbles. Many people use castile soap for babies, due to its mild properties. Grate a bar of plain castile soap and mix it with hot water to create the basis for liquid hand soap.

Instructions

    • 1

Grate 1 cup of castile soap pieces using the cheese grater. Measure the grated soap accurately by packing it tightly into the glass measuring cup.

    • 2

Measure and pour the water into the saucepan. Set the stove burner to high and heat the water until it almost boils. Remove the saucepan from the heat.

    • 3

Add the grated castile soap to the hot water and stir with a whisk until the castile soap and the hot water are totally combined.

    • 4

Allow the soap to cool until it is room temperature.

    • 5

Choose the essential oils you will add to the soap base. Suggestions include orange oil, cinnamon oil, peppermint oil, eucalyptus oil, lemongrass oil, sandalwood oil and pine oil. Mix two or more different oils for an interesting combination or use only one kind of essential oil.

    • 6

Add 60 drops of the essential oil(s) of your choice. If you are using more than one kind of oil, make the total number of drops of oil equal 60. Mix the essential oil into the soap to incorporate.

    • 7

Pour the scented hand soap into the soap dispenser and use as you would use any hand soap.
