How to Track Cashed-In Series EE Savings Bonds
Series EE bonds can be purchased if you have a social security number and you're a United States citizen, resident, civilian, or minor. According to the U.S. Treasury, to redeem Series EE bonds at financial institutions, you need to show proper identification such as a driver's license and have an account with that institution. The account must be active for the past 6 months. A 1099-INT tax document is issued when a bond is redeemed or at the end of the tax year. Here we'll review the process to track cashed in Series EE bonds.

1
Obtain the serial numbers of the bond(s) and the approximate dates the bonds were redeemed. You will also need to provide a signed request by the owner of the bond(s) or co-owner. This written request is to inquire as to the status of the bond(s). If you do not have the serial numbers of the redeemed securities, you will need the taxpayer identification number(s) of the bond owner or co-owner (this could appear on bonds dated January 1974 and after) or of the bond purchaser if the bonds were gifts. You will also need the individual's name(s) (the bond owner and co-owner) that could be listed on the bonds, the addresses of the owner and co-owner, approximate years and months the securities were bought, and the denomination of the bonds.

There are specific forms that must be completed in instances of lost or stolen Series EE bonds. Fill out form PDF 1048. You will need to provide the serial numbers of the bonds and the dates the bonds were redeemed. Form PDF 2490 (Description of United States savings bonds/notes) must be included as well. This form gives a description of any bonds you currently have ownership of. The forms can be obtained from the U.S. Treasury website. (Go to http://www.treasurydirect.gov/forms.htm.
