How to Use Epsom Salt for Fertilizing Lawns

Epsom salt is a good source of magnesium and sulfate to help turn the lawn green. It can aid the lawn's ability absorb phosphates and nitrogen, two important nutrients for a healthy and happy lawn. It can also help with new grass germination and keep pests away from your lawn. You can purchase Epsom Salts at many grocery stores, pharmacies or health stores.

Things You'll Need

• Epsom salts
• Fertilizer
• Bucket
• Gardening gloves
• Water

Instructions

1. Mix Epsom salts with your typical lawn fertilizer. You want a ratio of 1/2 lb. of Epsom salts for every 1,000 square feet of lawn.

2. Distribute the mixture evenly on the lawn with a fertilizer spreader in the early spring.

3. Water your lawn thoroughly so the fertilizer and Epsom salts do not burn the lawn. Watering will also help the mixture get deep into the roots of your lawn.

4. Fertilize again with the same ratio in the fall.

Tips & Warnings

• You can also mix the Epsom salts with water and spray on our lawn. An ounce of Epsom Salts per gallon of water is sufficient.

• Add fertilizer in the early morning or evening when the temperatures are cooler.
