How to Apply for a Job in the Social Security Department

In order to apply for a job with the Social Security Administration, you cannot just blindly send a resume. You must apply to a specific job opening within the department. USAJOBS is an online application system that is used to apply for jobs with the federal government, including the Social Security Department.

Instructions

    • 1

Create an account with USAJOBS by clicking the "USAJOBS First Stop" button. Click the "Create Account" link under Step 1.

    • 2

Enter the required information on the account form. Required information on USAJOBS includes first and last name, home address, phone and email. You must also create a user name and password for future sign-ins and password questions that can be used to recover your password in case you forget it.

    • 3

Build resumes in your account. You can store up to five resumes in a single USAJOBS account. You will need to fill in the resume template on the website with the information on your current resume.

    • 4

Search the USAJOBS system for open positions in the Social Security Administration department. Type social security into the keyword box provided and a location in the city field to narrow down the search.

    • 5

Click on a job title in the search results provided and you will be taken to additional information regarding that specific employment opportunity. Use the tabs at the top of the screen to move between the job duties, qualifications for the position and benefit information.

    • 6

Go to the "How to Apply" tab to determine which forms you must fill out in order to apply for the specific position. The application process for a social security job depends upon the position and the location of the job, but will often require the submission of an application on the USAJOBS site, the completion of an occupational questionnaire and the submission of a resume or other additional documents. Press the "Apply Online" button at the bottom of the job screen to be walked step-by-step through the online application process.

Tips & Warnings

  • There is a job search feature directly on the Social Security Administration's website, but when you click to apply, you will be directed to the USAJOBS site.
