How to Make a Pirate Ship Cake Using a Kit

Pirates are a favorite theme for children's birthday parties. Not only are they acceptable for both boys' and girls' parties, but they can be enjoyed by people of all ages. Preparing a pirate cake is easy to do, especially with the help of a cake kit. Pirate cake kits generally have everything you need to create a pirate cake from scratch at home.

Things You'll Need

• Boxed cake mix
• Buttercream frosting in several colors
• Pirate cake kit
• Platter or cake base
• Pastry bag
• Pastry tips
• Spatulas

Instructions

1. Prepare the cake mix as directed by recipe. When cool, place on a cake turntable and top with enough buttercream to cover the cake. Using a spatula, smooth the buttercream on the sides and top of the cake. Place the cake on a serving platter or cake board.

2. Remove pieces of the cake kit. If using cake design from box, plan on where each piece will go. If using a unique design, map out where each piece will go. Place the pirates on the cake. If kit comes with a ship or palm trees, place those on the cake as well.

3. Pipe decorative borders on the sides and bottom of the cake using contrasting colors of buttercream. For a sandy beach, use brown sugar or brown colored coarse sugar. For a water feature, use blue frosting.

4. Apply a message on the cake with a small pastry tip, such as the name of the event or a name of the guest of honor. Use colors that will match the cake design.

5. Add any additional parts from the kit, such as plastic pirate flags or chocolate gold coins from the pirate's booty.
