Instructions

    • 1

Wipe down the stairs with your rag and water to relieve them of any dust or debris that has accumulated on them; then let them dry.

    • 2

Apply a thin coat of primer to the steps, and allow them to dry.

    • 3

Put on a coat of paint. You will probably need two or three coats to make the color perfectly solid on the steps. Allow the stairs to dry between coats and after the last coat.

    • 4

Apply a solid coat of either spray or brush-on varnish. This will make the colors in the paint come out and serve as a protective layer over the paint.

    • 5

Lastly, add your rubber or vinyl treads to the stairs to keep you and others from slipping, as finished paint can be slippery. Treads can be found for a low price at most hardware stores.

Tips & Warnings

  • Painting tape can be used if the stairs are in an area of mostly finished surfaces that you do not want to paint. Apply the tape to the very edge of the surface where you will be painting.
