Instructions

    • 1

Check the gas tank on your car before you inset the hose. Remove the cap, place your finger inside and run it around slightly. Newer cars use a safety net inside the gas tank that takes the form of a clear screen. If the car has a screen, you can't siphon gas from it because the tube won't fit.

    • 2

Place a clear hose or tube into the gas tank of the car, making sure to twist it slightly so it slides inside easily. This tube will function as your means of getting the gas out of the car and into the can.

    • 3

Set your empty gas can on the ground beside your car. The gas can must be lower than the gas tank for the siphoning to work. If it's too high, the gas won't flow into the can.

    • 4

Kneel down slightly so that you're facing the gas tank. This makes it easier for you to transfer the gas. Suck gently on the hose, using an even and fluid motion. Try not to suck too hard unless you want to end up with gas in your mouth.

    • 5

Stick the end of the hose that you had in your mouth into the gas can as soon as you feel the gas rising in the tube. The force of gravity will cause the gas to move from the tank, into the hose and down into the can.

Tips & Warnings

  • Grab a breath mint after you're done siphoning. Even if you managed to escape getting gas in your mouth, the fumes can still cause your breath to smell.

  • Never siphon gas from someone else's car as this is illegal and viewed as theft. Even if you're in desperate need of gas, think about the fine and possible jail time associated with stealing gas before you consider it.

  • If you discover that you swallowed gas, talk with your doctor as soon as possible. It's harmful and toxic to swallow gas and even inhaling the fumes for too long can make you sick.
