How to Clean Healing Stones

Alternative health practitioners, from acupuncturists to naturopaths, often use healing crystals in conjunction with other healing modalities. They believe that different stones carry different healing properties. For instance, amethyst is used to enhance creativity and to calm the nervous system. Hematite is believed to heal blood-related illnesses such as anemia. Before using stones in a healing practice, however, it's necessary to clean them, to clear them of any negative energy they may hold.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

Use sea salt with water to clear the stone. Add one tablespoon of sea salt to 4 ounces of filtered or purified water in a ceramic or glass container. Allow the stone to soak for 24 hours. If you live next to the ocean, you can use seawater as a purifying agent.

    • 2

Use dry sea salt. Pour sea salt into a ceramic or glass container of salt. Bury the crystal, points down, in the salt. Again, leave the stone in the salt for 24 hours.

    • 3

Smudge your stone. Light a bundle of sage with a lighter or match. Run the crystal through the smoke a few times and it should be clear. Make sure to test the stone's energy when you're finished, to make sure it feels clean to you.

    • 4

Set your stones outside in the moonlight. The strongest time to clear by moonlight is between the full moon and the new moon. Leave them outside for at least one night. It may take longer if the stone holds a lot of negative energy or has been recently used in a major healing activity.

    • 5

Place the stones in running water, such as a creek or river. If you're in an urban setting, put the stones in a ceramic or glass container and leave under running tap water for 20 minutes. Keep the points facing downward so the energy flows down the drain.

Tips & Warnings

  • Always use sea salt, not table salt, to clear stones. Table salt and iodized salts contain aluminum and other chemicals that may damage the stone.

  • The best herbs for smudging are cedar and sage.

  • Stick with moonlight when clearing stones outdoors. Some healers use sunlight to cleanse their stones, but sunlight can fade and damage stones. Amethyst, for example, fades if exposed to sunlight.

  • Use cold water. Hot water can damage some stones.

  • Be careful when using sea salt to purify because salt erodes the coatings of some stones. Do some research before deciding which cleaning process to use.
