The most common insect pest on roses, aphids are small insects that suck sap from their host plants. Aphids prefer fast-growing plants with tender shoots and buds. Although a low to moderate infestation of aphids will not damage a rosebush, high infestations produce the aphid trademark sticky honeydew, which can cause the growth of black mold on rosebush leaves.
