How to Ask if You Got the Job

If you felt as though you aced the interview, and a couple of days down the road you haven't heard anything, you might be driving yourself crazy wondering whether or not you got the job. Luckily, there are some proactive steps you can take in order to find out whether or not you secured the position.

Instructions

    • 1

Think ahead about what you need to ask in a phone call or email to a potential employer; this is not something that you do on an unprepared whim. Take a deep breath and be ready to introduce yourself as well as your intention (example: checking in about the status of their hiring for the secretary position, interviewed on 12/12/12).

    • 2

Write an email to the people who interviewed you. An email is a less intrusive way of asking about a job, and should be the route you choose if you are nervous; an email lets you plan ahead and deliver your message smoothly, whereas a phone call could come off as a bit pushy.

Make the phone call. If you are confident and the job status is really very pressing to you; try calling the potential employer. Just make sure that you are in a quite environment and that you have your list of questions ready for the employer. You will want to ask your question delicately, for example; "I am still very interested in the position and I wanted to follow up to see where your agency is in the process of filling that position".
