How to Tune Up a Honda Lawnmower

Honda lawnmowers are well-engineered and experience few problems if maintenance schedules are followed. As it doesn't require special tools to tune up a Honda mower, following these schedules is well within the abilities of a homeowner even slightly skilled with hand tools.

Things You'll Need

  • Wrench to remove oil drain plug
  • Drain pan
  • Air filter
  • Spark plug
  • Anti-seize compound
  • Spark plug wrench
  • Motor oil
  • Owner's manual
  • Place a drain pan under the mower and remove the crankcase drain plug.

  • Remove the cover to the air cleaner. It is plastic and held on by plastic tabs. Gently depress the tabs while pulling the cover off. Remove and replace the engine air filter.

  • Blow a stream of air around the base of the spark plug to remove any dirt. Remove the spark plug using a spark plug wrench. Coat the threads of the new spark plug with anti-seize compound and screw it in the cylinder head. Tighten the spark plug with the spark plug wrench, being careful to avoid overtightening.

  • Replace the crankcase drain plug and fill the crankcase with engine oil according to the owner's manual.

  • Using compressed air, remove any debris from the engine cooling fins.

Tips & Warnings

  • Once a year, the mower blade should be removed and sharpened. This is best done at a professional shop that has the capability to balance the blade after sharpening.
  • If the spark plug does not easily start in the threads by hand, take it out and try it again. Forcing a spark plug into a cylinder head will destroy the head, requiring an expensive replacement at a small-engine repair shop.
