How to Start a Trumpet Plant From Seed

Trumpet plants are hearty and rambunctious garden vines featuring bright green leaves and stems. The blooms are yellow, orange or pink and feature a trumpet-like shape. Trumpet vines will climb any structure they are planted near and can grow extremely quickly when trained to go up an arbor. New plants are most easily started from suckers of an existing plant, but they can also be started quite easily from seed. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Place your trumpet vine seeds in a Ziploc bag that is partially filled with soil-free potting mix. Put the bag in your refrigerator for 60 days to induce dormancy.

    • 2

Poke holes in each section of an egg carton and fill each section with soil-free potting mix. Once the trumpet vine seeds have been dormant for 60 days, remove them from the bag and replant them in the prepared egg carton. Water well.

    • 3

Place the egg carton on a grow light stand with the grow lights approximately 6 inches from the top of the egg carton. Keep the grow lights on for 14 hours a day. Within a month, your trumpet vine seeds should sprout.

    • 4

Dig a hole in your garden soil once the trumpet vine seedlings are 3 inches high. Planting during the spring is best, though many trumpet vines will prove to be hearty anytime after the last frost of the spring and before the first frost of the fall. Plant your trumpet vine seedlings and keep well watered for one month. Following that time period, no additional watering or fertilization should be required.

Tips & Warnings

  • Keep trumpet vines well pruned, as they have a tendency to take over if not kept in check.
