How to Use Serial Numbers to Find Year of Mobile Home

All mobile homes built in the United States after June 15, 1976 have a data plate that includes the manufacture date of the home. If you can't locate your data plate, if the plate is missing or if your home was built before June 15,1976, you can use the serial number to verify your home's age, either by decoding the number or by enlisting the assistance of your local DMV. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

      Locate the serial number on your home. The serial number is found on the data plate (if you have one); you also can find it stamped on the front chassis's steel cross-member. You might need to remove the home's skirting to locate the serial number.

      Check the 10th digit of the serial number. It tells you the year your mobile home was manufactured:
      B=1981; C=1982; D=1983; E=1984; F=1985; G=1986; H=1987; J=1988; K=1989; L=1990; M=1991; N=1992; P=1993; R=1994; S=1995; T=1996; V=1997; W=1998; X=1999; Y=2000; 1=2001; 2=2002; 3=2003; 3=2003; 4=2004; 5=2005; 6=2006; 7=2007

      If you have an older mobile home, contact the Department of Motor Vehicles in your state. They will be able to look up your serial number and tell you the age of your home.

Tips & Warnings

  • Serial numbers also are found on titles and insurance documents. If you have access to these documents, they will tell you your home's age.

  • You might also find the serial number, or VIN, near the back door on a piece of paper, on the inside wall of an under-sink cabinet, or on a wall near a hot water heater.
