Contact your local fire department and inquire about the burning times for your area. Be sure to check with them to see if you need any special permits for burning. Only burn during the designated time allowed.

Manually remove all poison oak plants and place them in a pile where you want to burn. Clear the area of any flammable materials before beginning your burn. A good rule of thumb is to keep a six-foot radius cleared around your burn pile.

Keep a water hose next to you as a precaution. That way if the fire starts to get out of hand you will be able to keep it under control.

Light the poison oak. It is best if the plants are dry. Light a stick and toss it on top of the pile. Never use any type of flammable liquid to start the fire.

Stay with the fire at all times. For safety reasons, never leave the fire unattended.
