How to Properly Tip a Restaurant Server

The overwhelming majority of a restaurant server's income is through tips. Most restaurant servers make below minimum wage ($3 to $4 per hour). At the end of any given shift, the servers will "tip out" the restaurant to help pay host, bus and bar staff.

Instructions

  1. Properly Tipping

    • 1

Look at the bill when the meal is finished. Look at the grand total after taxes. Many people will tip before taxes, remember that most servers have their own tip-outs. A server tip-out generally includes 1 to 4 percent of her net sales plus taxes.

    • 2

Tip between 15 percent to 20 percent of that number. An easy way to calculate that is to take the total and move the decimal point to the left once ($100.00 becomes $10.00) This will give you 10 percent. If you want to find 20 percent, multiply that number by two ($10.00 x 2 = $20.0) You now have two baselines on which to judge your final number.

    • 3

Be fair with your tip. Never leave less than 15 percent. Remember this is how this person makes a living. Anyone can have a bad day, so even if the service wasn't up to your standards, don't tip less.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you are at the bar, always pay your bar tab before going to your table for dinner. If you take the tab with you, chances are the bartender will never see the tip that they earned.
