How to Teach Students to Walk in a Line
When dealing with a classroom of students, one of the most challenging tasks, often even more so than teaching new material, is maintaining order when attempting to bring your students from one area of the school to another. The most effective method of keeping your students under control is to have them stay in a line when moving about the school, and while teaching the students to quickly line up requires patience, once accomplished it will greatly ease your passage around the school grounds.

1
Create a word or a sign which signals to the students that it is time to line up. A single blowing of a whistle, or a flicker of the classroom lights can both be effective methods of letting the students know to form an orderly line.
-
2
Explain to the students that when they are in line, it is not a time of play, and that they are to remain in one or two lines, of your choosing, and should not be milling around once lined up.

3
Use a line with the students whenever you are transporting them from one area of the school to another. By using lines everywhere you go, whether you are taking the students to recess, lunch or to the buses to go home, the students will learn more quickly that being loud or playing around in line just leads to more time standing around, and will become used to walking in a line much faster than if it is a sporadic tool.

4
Institute a buddy system if you will be having the students line up in pairs. Once paired the buddies can hold hands, with their hands raised in the air. This makes it easy to see who still needs a buddy, and also ensures that your two lines will be evenly spaced, as each student will have to be next to their buddy in order to be holding hands.

5
Reward your students for lining up quickly as a whole, or individual students for performing well in line if other students are acting up. By making a simple reward system, either directly with the promise of a treat of some sort, or more long term in which a good performance earns a gold star towards a reward, you can make the children want to behave properly.
