Check all your water-using appliances-toilets, washing machine, dishwashers, shower, etc.-for leaks. Often the leaks are obvious, but some might me tougher to find. For example, add food coloring to your toilet tank. If it filters into the bowl without any flushing, your toilet has a leak.

Check your taps and faucets, both indoors and outdoors. Make sure the water stops completely when the faucets are turned off. Bathtub faucets should not drip water for more than a minute after the water is turned off and the remaining water has filtered through. If you have an outdoor irrigation system, check it for leaks too.

Buy new appliances, if it fits your budget. Many newer appliances use less water, which could save hundreds of gallons of water per year. If you can't buy new appliances, try to use your existing ones more efficiently. Load the dishwasher completely before running, for example, and don't use more water than you need for the size of a laundry load. Don't run water while you are brushing your teeth, and don't use too much water when you wash your car.
