How to Control Hand Tremors After Sobriety

Sobriety is a great achievement, but it is often visited by small reminders of the past exhibited in withdrawal symptoms such as hand tremors. Hand tremors are involuntary shaking in the hands and fingers that often seems out of control. While you may not be able to stop the tremors entirely, you can ease them with home remedies or medication, if necessary.

1. Train your muscles to relax. Practice meditation and breathing exercises to help relax all the muscles in your body. Purchase guided tapes or music that can help to lead you in a deep relaxation exercise. Keep a consistent schedule that allows you to spend time each day just relaxing. Consider getting a professional massage or acupuncture treatment.

2. Keep yourself healthy with regular exercise and proper diet. Avoid caffeine and other stimulants that can make the tremors worse. Get plenty of sleep each night. Aim for at least eight hours.

3. See a doctor if your tremors are severely affecting your ability to eat, write, or concentrate. Discuss if you are a good candidate for medications such as beta-blockers, gabapentin, or primidone to treat the hand tremors.
