How to Germinate Green Bean Seeds in Water

Green bean seeds are notorious for their low germination rates. Because they're more difficult to germinate in soil than other seeds, they often rot or mold before they start producing plants. Germinating the seeds in water will help to break down the thick outer coating. After they've been successfully germinated, you can transplant them to soil. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Fill the bottom of a clean mason or canning jar with enough seeds to just cover the bottom.

    • 2

Begin chitting, or soaking, the seeds by adding enough warm water to cover the seeds by one inch. Place the lid on the jar and put it in a warm, dark place to simulate being underground. Leave the seeds in the jar for 24 hours.

    • 3

Drain your jar and pour your seeds out into a paper towel. Fold the paper towel so that the seeds are in the center but completely covered by the towel on all sides, similar to an envelope. Wrap it again in another paper towel to make sure your seeds won't come out and you paper towel packet won't open.

    • 4

Place your paper towel of seeds into the jar. Add just enough water to get the paper towel wet. Tip the jar do let any excess water drain out. You want the towel to be moist but without any standing water in the jar.

    • 5

Place the jar in a warm spot, like on top of your refrigerator. Check on it in five days. If your seeds haven't sprouted, check on them in another five days. When you see sprouts forming, your seeds have germinated and can be transplanted to seedling cups or your garden.
