How to Freeze Fresh Peeled Ginger

Ginger is one of those versatile spices that adds an extra punch of flavor to both sweet and savory dishes. It's healthy too, says the George Mateljan Foundation's World's Healthiest Foods. Ginger has been used for centuries to soothe gastrointestinal distress, but modern preliminary studies show that ginger has even more potent properties that may ease symptoms of arthritis, boost your immune system and reduce the risk of colorectal and ovarian cancer. If you find yourself with an abundance of this multi-talented spice, do yourself a favor and freeze it for later. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Place your freshly-peeled ginger on a piece of waxed paper.

    • 2

Wrap or roll the the waxed paper very securely around the ginger. If you roll it, seal the ends with twist-ties.

    • 3

Place the wrapped ginger into plastic freezer bags and store them in the freezer. The ginger will keep for up to six months as long as it is not allowed to thaw. Thawing and re-freezing can ruin ginger's flavor and texture.

    • 4

Remove your wrapped ginger from the freezer when you need it for a recipe. Slice off the approximate amount you need (even frozen ginger is easy to slice). Immediately wrap the remaining ginger and place it back in the freezer.

    • 5

Use your ginger. Once it's out of the freezer, the ginger will thaw in five to ten minutes, but you don't need to wait to use it. Frozen ginger works just as well as thawed ginger in recipes. In fact, it's much easier to grate while frozen.

Tips & Warnings

  • Discard ginger if it appears rotten, mushy, slimy, moldy or emits a foul odor.
