How to Make Grapevine Crafts

If you have some grapevine and a hot glue gun, you are armed to decorate for any season. Grapevines are convenient craft material. They are inexpensive, come in a variety of shapes and sizes, and are versatile enough to make into many different types of craft projects. Grapevines easily accept glue and paint, so they are a pleasure to work with. Next time you come across grapevines on sale at a craft or discount store, stock up. You'll find many uses for them.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Grapevine balls
  • Spray paint
  • String or twine
  • Grapevine wreaths
  • Ribbons
  • Glue gun
  • Embellishments (leaves, flowers, shells)
  • Candle in glass holder

    Grapevine Ball Garland

  1. Step 1

Take small grapevine spheres, approximately six inches or smaller. Spray paint them, if desired.

  2. Step 2

Thread a piece of string through one of the grapevines. Loop it over the ball and tie the string securely.

  3. Step 3

String additional balls onto your string to make it as long as you wish. You can hang these from porch railings, on your Christmas tree or around your house as a distinctive garland.

  4. Costume Crown

  5. Step 1

Make a crown for yourself for Halloween or for a child to play dress-up with. Get a grapevine wreath that fits the head of the person for whom you are making it. It should rest over the head without falling off, but it should not drop low enough to cover the eyes or ears.

  6. Step 2

Spray paint the grapevine wreath, if desired.

  7. Step 3

Wrap 1/8 or 1/4 inch ribbon around the grapevine going one way. Secure it occasionally with a dab of hot glue. Wrap more ribbon around, going in the opposite direction, so they crisscross each other. Secure the ends with glue. Leave long, trailing ribbons, if desired, that will hang down the back.

  8. Step 4

Glue some fun items to the crown. For a princess spring crown, you might glue silk flowers to it. For a king of the forest crown, you might glue leaves, acorns and pine cones spray painted gold. Adorn your crown with seashells, small glass pebbles or painted wooden die cuts. Use your imagination.

  9. Candle Holders

  10. Step 1

Use grapevine wreaths to make decorative holiday holders for glass encased pillar candles.

  11. Step 2

Take a grapevine wreath that is about four inches in diameter. Set your glass pillar candle inside of it to make sure it fits. Set the candle aside.

  12. Step 3

Use hot glue to decorate the grapevine wreath with seasonal items. For the winter holidays, you might glue on red berries, holly leaves or little figures of angels or Santa. For spring holidays, you might glue on flower buds, lace and ribbon. For the 4th of July, you can glue on ribbon stripes and small wood die-cut stars painted with glitter glue.

  13. Step 4

Allow your glue to dry. Set your wreath down on your table or shelf, and place the glass candle inside of it.

Tips & Warnings
  • Never set an open candle holder or exposed candle inside a grapevine wreath. Only use tall glass pillar candles to avoid a fire hazard.
