How to Make a Keyhole Out of Cardboard
A cardboard keyhole makes a fun addition to making your own toy chest for a treasure hunt, or a fort out of an old appliance box for kids to play in. Little details such as a keyhole help stimulate the imaginations and make the project more fun. Collect the cardboard scraps from your craft and, instead of throwing them away, turn them into a nifty, decorative keyhole.
Things You'll Need
- Scrap cardboard
- Circle stencil or bottle cap
- Ruler
- Utility knife
- Paint
- Glue
Instructions
-
-
1
Cut a piece of cardboard into a rectangle.
-
2
Place the cardboard onto your work space. In the center, trace a circle using a 1-inch-diameter circle stencil. If you don't have stencils, trace around a small plastic bottle cap.
-
-
3
Use the pencil and a ruler to make a small triangle, with the top point overlapping the bottom of your circle.
-
4
Cut out the keyhole shape neatly with a utility knife to make a keyhole plate.
-
5
Make a second keyhole plate if you want one on the inside as well. Lay your first piece of cardboard over your second piece of cardboard and use it as a template. Trace the keyhole shape on the second piece of cardboard and cut it out.
-
6
Spray paint your keyhole plates gold, silver, gray or whatever color will go with your project. Allow them to dry.
-
7
Lay one of your keyhole plates against the project, such as on the door of your clubhouse or the front of the treasure chest. Trace the keyhole where it will go.
-
8
Cut the small keyhole out of your project door or chest. Glue the keyhole plates to the project so that the keyholes line up.
-
9
Look through the keyhole to see the inside of your clubhouse or treasure chest.
