Instructions

    • 1

Settle into your kayak. Your feet should be extended and rest comfortably on the foot-holders that are a part of most kayaks. Your back should rest snugly against the seat. The way you sit in your kayak will also help you keep your balance.

    • 2

Find your balance after getting into the kayak and pushing off into the water. Lean slightly from one side of the kayak to the other and you will understand what it is going to take to balance yourself.

    • 3

Paddle around near shore so that you understand the direction your kayak will turn when you paddle. If you push the paddle forward in the water on your right side, your kayak will turn left. If you push your paddle back against the water on your right side, your kayak will turn right.

    • 4

Practice gaining speed and slowing down. When moving at a good rate of speed, stick your paddle into the water and push forward. This will slow your kayak down.

    • 5

Now that you understand the basics, spend some time paddling around the lake and getting comfortable with your kayak. The best way to improve is to practice.

Tips & Warnings

  • Most beginners are eager to jump into the kayak and start to paddle with intensity. You'll eventually learn that you need to slow down. Your arms will be tired. Remember that it's a marathon, not a sprint.

  • When first learning, stay close to shore in case you tip your kayak.

  • Choosing the right size of kayak is important. Beginners should choose kayaks with a wide base. This will make it easier to balance.

  • Keep a life jacket in your kayak in case of an emergency.
