How to Toilet Train a Maltipoo Puppy

Maltipoos can be difficult to toilet train because of their size. They simply cannot hold their bladders as long as a larger breed puppy. Housetraining your maltipoo will take patience, perseverance and time. Though toilet training a maltipoo puppy does have challenges, you can rest assured your pup will eventually learn this important skill.

Instructions

    • 1

Choose a safe and easy-to-clean area of the home, such as an area with tile flooring, for your maltipoo to stay during toilet training. Use a baby gate to restrict your maltipoo puppy to this area. A puppy given run of the entire house may choose a less desirable spot to "potty" and you will have to work extra hard to break a bad habit.

    • 2

Lay down puppy pads or newspaper on one area of the floor. Your maltipoo puppy may choose to use the pads right away when he has to go. If you catch him eliminating in a different spot, immediately place him on the puppy pads and praise him. Then clean the soiled area thoroughly with a special disinfectant that gets rid of pet odor.

    • 3

Set a schedule for feeding and going outside that you know you will be able to stick to. This helps your maltipoo learn to rely on the fact that predictable food and outside breaks are coming. A maltipoo puppy cannot hold its bladder long, so frequent trips outdoors, every hour if possible, are recommended. If the puppy must stay in his area for longer than an hour or two, the puppy pads will help keep his area clean until he gains better bladder control.

    • 4

Take your maltipoo puppy outside right away after eating anything. Most of the time, pups will need to eliminate within 15 minutes of eating and drinking. This can help establish a good habit right from the beginning as they learn that outside is where they are to go potty.

    • 5

Use lots of praise, physical affection and love, as well as tasty treats, every time your little maltipoo puppy eliminates outside. Toilet training a maltipoo puppy should involve a lot of positive reinforcement, and absolutely no negative punishments.

Tips & Warnings

  • Purchase an X-pen at your local pet store for your puppy to be in outside. This will give him more time outdoors.

  • If you use a crate instead of a gated area in your house, never crate your maltipoo puppy for longer than an hour or two. He likely will have an accident if kept penned up for a longer period of time, and it is unhealthy for him to remain in a soiled crate.
