How to Make a Eye in Gimp 2

If you are creating an ad for an eye doctor's office or a detective agency, one graphic image you will probably want to use in the ad is an eye. In both cases, this symbol is universally recognized and understood in that application. A good program to use for creating such an eye graphic is GIMP 2. GIMP 2 is a powerful freeware graphics program that rivals Photoshop in many of its functions and capabilities. In fact, if you know how to use Photoshop, you will have no problem using GIMP, since most of its tools mirror those in Photoshop.

Instructions

    • 1

Go to GIMP.org and download and install the GIMP application to your computer. When you do you will see that a shortcut to the program has been placed on your desktop. Click it to start the program.

    • 2

Select "File" and click "New." In the panel that opens, make the size and resolution whatever you need for your eye graphic. If it is going on a card or brochure, it can be relatively small, but if it will be on a large sign or billboard, make it large to begin with, since the raster type graphics that GIMP produces are not expandable without loss of resolution.

Select the "Ellipse" tool from the toolbar and use it to draw the shape of an eye. Now select "Edit" and then click "Stroke Selection." In the panel that opens choose the "Width," "Style" and "Color or Pattern" of the line. Or choose to have the line drawn with one of the "Paint" tools. Click "OK" and the eye will be outlined.

    • 4

Go to the "Layers" panel and click on the "Create New Layer" icon. In the panel that opens make the layer "Transparent" and click "OK."

Select the "Ellipse" tool again and use it to draw in the iris for the eye. Now select the "Paint Bucket" tool, change the foreground color to what you want for the iris, and fill the selection with the color. Create another layer. Now repeat this process to add the pupil for the eye, changing the foreground color to black. When you are done, save your work as a high-resolution JPEG.
