How to Clean Foam Mattress Toppers

Save

Foam mattress toppers can provide that extra bit of comfort that your mattress doesn't. Sparing you the cost of purchasing a whole new mattress, a foam mattress topper comes at a fraction of the cost. While you wouldn't think that something that goes under the sheets would get dirty, the combination of sweat and dust can eventually take its toll. Though cleaning this rather large piece of foam may seem like an impossible task, it's actually much easier than you would think.

Things You'll Need

  • Vacuum cleaner
  • Powdered laundry detergent
  • Clean cloth
  • Spray bottle
  • Move the mattress topper to a flat area so that you can clean it easily.

  • Use the brush attachment of a vacuum cleaner to vacuum away loose dirt and debris. Be sure to flip it over and vacuum both sides.

  • Sprinkle powdered laundry detergent onto obvious stains and rub gently with a clean damp cloth to remove them.

  • Mix one part powdered laundry detergent to two parts water in a spray bottle.

  • Ensure that the lid is on tight and shake the bottle to mix up the solution.

  • Spray the entire surface of the mattress topper. Use enough of the solution to make the surface damp to the touch, but don't over-saturate it.

  • Allow the mattress topper to soak for 2 to 3 hours.

  • Rinse the area with a clean damp cloth to remove any residual detergent

  • Flip the mattress topper over and repeat the process on the other side.

  • Allow the mattress topper to air dry for 24 hours.

Tips & Warnings

  • Some mattress toppers are machine washable. Be sure to read the manufacturer's instructions carefully. If you decide to machine wash it, use the gentlest possible setting and allow it to air dry rather than putting it in the dryer.
  • Ensure that the mattress topper is completely dry before putting it back on your bed or storing it to avoid mold and mildew.
