To become a firefighter with the Fire Department of New York (FDNY), you must first undergo a rigorous application process that requires a written exam and a battery of mental and physical fitness evaluations, which will measure your aptitude and ability to perform in this demanding position.   1. How to Become a Firefighter in FDNY

      Meet preliminary eligibility requirements and apply to take the written exam, which is called The Open Competitive Examination (see References). This exam is offered to the general public every four years, with the next exam taking place in January 2011. Submit the application, along with the required fee (money order only), to: DCAS Applications Section, 1 Centre Street, 14th floor, New York, NY 10007. The money order should be made payable to: D.C.A.S. (EXAMS), and the packet must be mailed. No other delivery method will be accepted.

      Wait to receive your admissions card from DCAS, which will provide details about the upcoming exam. Call (718) 999-FDNY to order free study material. Take the written exam. Wait for details about the upcoming physical exam.

      Take the physical exam, which will test you in multiple areas of physical fitness. There is a fee for this exam, which will be due at the time of testing. This fee is waiverable under certain conditions (See "The Physical Ability Test" on the Notice of Examination). Upon successful completion of both the written and physical exams, your name will be placed on the civil service waiting list, where you will be assigned a list number.

      Take the medical and psychological test and undergo a complete background investigation. You will be notified in advance. Preliminary eligibility information will be checked.

      Wait for your test results to arrive in the mail. Once you pass all tests, your name will be placed on the eligibility list, where you will be assigned a different list number. You will be contacted to proceed to the final step--the appointment process.

      Meet all final eligibility requirements to be considered for appointment (See "How to Qualify for Appointment" on the Notice of Examination). Pay all associated fees and receive your appointment.
