How to Maintain Healthy Hair During the Winter Season
Harsh weather can damage your hair. Winter hair care is especially important, as hair is likely to be drier and break more easily during the dry, cold winter months than in the warmer, humid summertime.
It is easier and less expensive to keep hair healthy than it is to repair damaged hair. Following a routine to keep your tresses in good condition can save you time and money later.

Shampoo your hair less frequently. Over-shampooing can rob hair of the moisture it needs to maintain a healthy shine and manageability. In general, it is not necessary to shampoo every time you shower, as a slight buildup of natural oils is essential to healthy hair. Shampooing every other day is sufficient in most cases.

When shampooing, use a vitamin-enriched shampoo. Look for shampoos intended for dry or damaged hair, or that are advertised as "moisturizing" or "nourishing." These shampoos usually contain vitamin E and natural ingredients such as avocado oil, olive oil, lemon extract, soy protein or beta glucan (derived from oats).

Condition often. Even if you skip the shampoo in your daily shower, use conditioner. Work conditioner in starting at the tips. Massage conditioner into hair and work upward towards roots. Leave the conditioner in for a few moments, or the amount of time recommended on the bottle, then rinse.

Deep condition once a week. There are many deep conditioning products on the market. A natural alternative to over-the-counter deep conditioners is olive oil. Warm a few tablespoons of olive oil in the microwave, then work it into your hair as you would regular conditioner. Leave the oil on hair for several minutes, then rinse. You may wish to shampoo to make sure no film from the oil remains.

Let hair dry naturally whenever possible. Blow dryers can damage hair. However, make sure hair is dry before going out in the cold. Wet hair is more susceptible to damage, and exposure to extreme conditions such as wind and low temperatures can cause damage.
