While the process is serious and requires hours of studying and preparation, obtaining a nutrition certification allows you to take advantage of many opportunities. You can pursue a career in nutrition and wellness consulting or education, weight loss or wellness centers, or in health food or nutrition retail stores. You should have basic nutritional and health knowledge, and a desire to help others obtain their nutritional and weight goals.
Things You'll Need
- Internet access
- High school diploma
Visit the American Fitness Professionals and Associates' (AFPA) website. Click on the "Get Certified" tab and scroll down to the Nutrition & Wellness Consultant Certification. Click on the link and read the details about the program. You'll need to scroll to the bottom of the page to purchase the certification program, which costs $395. You must have a high school diploma (or equivalent) to purchase.
Review the contents of the package you receive in the mail from AFPA. Make sure you have two course textbooks, four audio instructional CDs, a certification examination and an interactive learning CD-ROM. Read and study the material. It's a good idea to take advantage of the online resources listed in the textbooks for extra study tips and chapter summaries.
Take the certification exam and send it back to AFPA for grading within six months from the purchase of your certification package. The exam includes 200 multiple choice, true/false and short answer questions, as well as a case study. You must score at least 90% to pass. If you do not pass, you have one chance to retake the exam, within 60 days. Upon passing, you will receive your nutrition certification.
