How to Load a Grease Cartridge in a Manual Grease Gun

Grease guns can be used for a number of projects. Industrial machinery, house tools and any object that has moving parts may need to be maintained with a grease gun at regular intervals. Adding grease to moving parts provides lubrication, which reduces friction and heat and decreases wear and tear on the parts. Manual grease guns are operated by hand pumps; air- and battery-operated models are also available. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Pull back on the grease gun's plunger handle, which is at the back end of the gun.

    • 2

Unscrew the bottom cap of the grease gun and remove it with the plunger to expose the spent grease cartridge.

    • 3

Remove the grease cartridge. Use pliers to grasp the edge of the cartridge if it is stuck, and pull it out.

    • 4

Remove the replacement grease cartridge's cap, which is a seal at the top of the cartridge.

    • 5

Slide the cartridge into the gun with the exposed grease end first.

    • 6

Replace the grease gun's end cap, along with the plunger, and tighten it. Pump the grease gun's handle to release any air that may be trapped inside.

Tips & Warnings

  • If the grease gun's end cap is stuck, place the grease gun into a vise and use a pipe wrench to remove the cap.
