How to Pass a Permit Test

Nobody likes to take tests. The driver's permit test is probably the most disliked test of them all. For one thing, you can't get your driver'a license if you don't pass it. If that happens, you have to take the test again, and again, and again ... until you receive a passing score. All that can be eliminated, however, by passing the test on the first try.

Go to the DMV website (link listed in the resources section). Choose your state from the green map and click on it to find the guide for your state.

Look under the resources section to the left and click "Manuals and Handbooks."

Select your state's driver's license manual.

    • 4

Download the manual and study until you know it inside and out.

    • 5

Follow the link in the resources section to take the learner's permit practice test. Click "Start Quiz" to begin.

    • 6

Take the practice test repeatedly until you can answer the questions without hesitation.

Tips & Warnings

  • Pay close attention to the numerical values in the handbook. These are often the hardest to remember, and many will be on the test.

  • If there's anything in the manual you don't understand, ask someone to go over it with you.

  • It helps to read the manual from beginning to end, just as you would any other book. Don't skip around and it will make more sense.

  • Some states limit how many times you can retake the test. You might have to take additional classes if you fail repeatedly, so be prepared.
