      Draw the topiary design you want to create using paper and pencil. If you are new to creating topiary templates, stick with a simple design at first. Consider creating a circle, square or heart topiary template.

      Shape the heavy-gauge wires with your pliers, using your sketch as a guide, Compare your work to your sketch as you go to ensure that your proportions are attractive and that you are getting the shape you want.

      Cut the wire with wire clippers and the position it over the outdoor shrub or vine, pushing the ends of the topiary firmly into the soil. For best results, position it over a plant that is still quite small so that it can grow into the template.

      Prune any branches as they grow outside of your topiary frame. Doing this will ensure that your plant conforms to the proper shape and provides a beautiful accent for your garden.
