How to Treat Macular Edema

Macular edema is a condition in which excess fluid builds up on the retina of the eye. This can impair vision and lead to blindness if untreated. Fortunately, the condition is highly treatable with modern medication and care. Most patients with macular edema regain full visual acuity with treatment.

Instructions

1. Talk to your optometrist about glasses that will correct your vision. As you receive treatment for your condition, you may not immediately recover full visual acuity. In the meantime, you'll want to be able to see to perform daily tasks; your optometrist can help you find lenses that correct your new ocular challenge.

2. Use anti-inflammatory eyedrops. These are used to reverse macular edema and reduce the inflammation of the retina. Your ophthalmologist may recommend a number of anti-inflammatory drugs, including cortisone and indomethacin. While eyedrops are normally effective, your doctor may recommend local injections or oral tablets of these medications.

3. Receive a vitrectomy, in which the vitreous gel of the eyeball is removed and replaced. This is only necessary is rare cases in which the macular edema is caused by a defective vitreous.
