How to Find Cat Urine Samples
If your cat is ill you will do most anything you must to ensure he gets well soon. Unfortunately, sometimes this means collecting a urine sample per request of your veterinarian. Urine samples are collected to check the cat's overall general health, to monitor the condition of feline diabetes, and even to diagnose and treat urinary tract conditions. Whatever the reason, collecting a urine sample can be done quite simply in your own home.
Things You'll Need
- Clean, dry litter tray
- Syringe
- Urine collection container (these can be obtained from a veterinarian)
- Non-absorbent cat litter (optional)
- Refrigerator (optional)

Collecting Feline Urine Samples
-
1
Empty all of the litter from your cat's litter tray. Clean the tray thoroughly and make sure it is completely dry before use. Or, you may simply use a new, unused litter tray for this purpose.
-
2
Put the tray in its usual spot and wait for the cat to urinate.

3
Collect the urine, once your cat has urinated, in a clean syringe and empty the syringe into a urine collection container.
-
4
Have your veterinarian provide you with some non-absorbent kitty litter to put into the tray, if your cat will not urinate into an empty litter pan.
-
5
Take the sample in as quickly as possible to your veterinarian, as a fresh sample is best. If you cannot use the sample quickly, place the urine storage container into the refrigerator until you are able to use the sample or take it to your veterinarian.

Tips & Warnings
In place of non-absorbent kitty litter, you can also try using plastic beads or aquarium gravel in the litter tray for your cat. If you are absolutely unable to collect a urine sample from your cat, your veterinarian will be able to do so for you.
