Men and women both need estrogen for certain bodily functions and it is important that the hormones are in balance. As men age, the estrogen tend to increase, but in some men, it can decrease. The low levels of estrogen in males lead to high risk of vertebral fractures in older men and osteoporosis, according to a study at the University of California San Diego. If you have low estrogen levels, you tend to have a low body weight—but it can be difficult to diagnose, since there are few symptoms. Most men are between 10 and 30 picograms per milliliter (pg/mL). If you are below 10 pg/mL, your estrogen level is too low. There are a few ways to increase estrogen levels through lifestyle changes.
Consult a physician and get tested if you believe you have low estrogen levels and are experiencing low body weight or you believe you may have osteoporosis.
Increase soy product intake such as swapping soy milk for dairy milk, eating soybeans or soy meat substitute products.
Start using herbs such as oregano, which increases estrogen levels. Use a little oregano on your meals once per day to raise levels.
Eat grapefruit once per day because it lowers testosterone and increases estrogen levels. Red licorice also increases estrogen levels.
Avoid or limit eating vegetables that reduce estrogen levels, such as broccoli, Brussels sprouts, cauliflower and cabbage.
Consider taking hormone replacement medications. Many of them are available over the counter or by prescription. Your physician can help you decide on the right medication and dosage.
