Instructions

Knot the yarn on one knitting needle and put this needle in your left hand. Slip the right needle into the knot on the left needle, bringing it up from the bottom. Keep the right needle under the left. Your needles should make an "X" inside the knot. Bring the yarn around the X, from the left, and place it in between the top "V" shape of the X. Pull this yarn, with the tip of the right needle, back through the knot. The knot should be on the left needle and the new loop on the right. Move the new loop (on the right needle) onto the left needle above the knot.

Slide the right needle under the left in between the knot and the loop on the left needle. Bring the yarn around, as you did before, placing it in between the top V. Bring the tip of the right needle, pulling the yarn, backwards until the needles are separate once more with a new loop on the right. Place this loop onto the left needle. Repeat this step, also called casting on, 50 times.

    • 3

Hold the needle with the cast-on stitches in your left hand. Slip the right needle into the first stitch on the left needle by pushing it under the left needle. Bring the yarn, from the back of the needles, around and to the left. Lay the yarn in the top of the V, as you've done before, and draw the right needle back with the yarn. As you pull the yarn back, the top stitch on the left needle with pull off. If correct, you will have a new stitch on the right needle and one less on the left. You've just learned the knit stitch! Repeat this step, row by row, until you have fabric measuring 7 inches long. Swap the needles, left needle to right hand and vice-versa, at each row's end.

The knit fabric is still attached to the needle. Knit two more stitches. Use the empty needle to lift the first of the newly knit stitches over the second and pull it off the needle. Knit another stitch and pull this over the last. Continue in this manner until you reach the last stitch. Cut the yarn and pull the yarn through the last stitch and knot.

    • 5

Fold the fabric in half lengthwise and lay it flat with the fold facing you. Thread the needle with yarn and knot the end. Stitch the edges of the knitted fabric together on both the left and right sides. Anchor the final sewing stitches by weaving the yarn through the knit stitches and knotting tightly. Reverse the hat, turning it inside-outside with the sewn seams inside.
