How to Clean the Plastic Part Around a LCD TV

Save

The plastic frame around an LCD TV attracts dust easily, but doesn't require extensive cleaning very often (in the average home). Smudged fingerprints, however, may build up on the plastic over time, making it look grimy. Cleaning the plastic is very simple and doesn't take special cleaners.

Things You'll Need

  • Water
  • Liquid soap
  • 2 bowls
  • Lint-free cloths
  • Unplug your LCD TV. Although the risk of electric shock is small, you should always unplug a TV before cleaning any part of it.

  • Fill a small bowl half full of water and set it on a stable surface. Add 1/2 tsp. of mild liquid soap, such as dish soap or hand soap.

  • Fill another bowl full of clean water.

  • Dip one corner of a clean, lint-free cloth in the bowl of soapy water. Wring out the corner of the cloth so that liquid does not drip. Wipe this over the top part of the plastic around your LCD TV.

  • Dampen a clean corner of the cloth and wipe down the plastic sides around the screen.

  • Dampen a clean corner of the cloth and wipe the plastic around the bottom of the TV.

  • Dampen a second clean cloth in the bowl of plain water. Wring out the cloth well and wipe it over the plastic as needed to remove all soapy residue.

  • Dry all the plastic surfaces you cleaned with a dry cloth.

Tips & Warnings

  • With normal use, the plastic around an LCD TV screen shouldn't need damp cleaning more than a couple of times a year. Between damp cleanings, wipe the plastic down with a dry microfiber dusting cloth.
  • Plastic parts cleaners are available at office supply stores. These cleaners come in liquids and foams.
  • Do not use glass cleaner, ammonia or solvent-based cleaners near LCD screens. These can damage the screen.
