How to Size Hockey Socks

Hockey socks are more like legwarmers than actual socks. They are knit tubes meant to cover your shin guards during practice or games. They add extra warmth and protection to players and come in a variety of colors and sizes. You must make sure you have the right size socks so that you don't have bare skin showing between your shin pads and your hockey pants. The socks should also be wide enough to slip over your shin pads easily without undue force.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure from just below your ankle bone to mid thigh. This is your length measurement. Don't worry if it is very long; hockey socks are made to cover most of your leg.

    • 2

Put on your shin pads and wrap the measuring tape around the widest part of the pads. This is how wide your socks should be.

    • 3

Use the sizing charts on Hockey Giant (see reference 1) and USA Hockey Socks (see reference 2) to choose the size you need. Check both sizing charts, as Hockey Giant carries youth, junior and senior sizes, while USA Hockey Socks carries mites, youth, intermediate and adult sizes.

    • 4

Note that the sizing order runs from smallest to largest this way: mites, youth, junior, intermediate, senior and adult. If none of these sizes match your measurement, request the size you need. Most suppliers will find it for you at no extra charge.

    • 5

Request custom socks, if the suppliers have the length you need but the width of the sock is off, or vice versa. Suppliers want your business and will do their best to accommodate you.
