Teaching a child to read is vitally important. A child who knows how to read and can read well can function in life and learn academics well. Small children should be introduced to reading and books early in life. A first grader can lead to read at school. You can also help the first grader learn to read at home and reinforce the lessons the child's teacher is teaching them.

      Start by introducing the child to books. Take them to libraries at least once a week. Many libraries have days where the children's librarian reads to the kids to help interest them in books. A children's librarian may have suggestions about what books your child might like to read.

      Purchase books for the child to keep. If possible buy books through your child's school or in a bookstore. Have the child come with you to choose books. Let them decide what interests them. Show them all kinds of books including picture books and books that have their interests. If your child likes to dance purchase books about dance.

      Work with your child on the formation of letters of the alphabet. The child should understand that letters represent sounds and each sound can combine to form words. Make sure that your child understands how the sounds work together. Show them how some letters are silent as well as how to work with vowels and consonants.

      Have your child begin to write basic letters. Writing can help them master reading. The child should be able to write each letter. Make it a game. Ask them how many words they can use that start with the letter k or the letter m. Have them write words that they find interesting such as the name of a family pet or sibling.

      Practice reading with your child. Read one line and ask the child to read the next line. Alternate with him or her. Have them sound out words that look unfamiliar. If they are still struggling spell out the word for them. Try to practice reading at least one book every single night with the child.

  • If your child is having trouble recognizing that letters correspond to sounds she may have a problem. Contact a teacher so they can get help with phonemic awareness.
