How to Treat Gas in a Baby

Treat gas in a baby and quickly stop crying and restlessness that begins after feedings. Infant gas is common, and several factors such as swallowing excess air and certain foods can bring on gas. But fortunately, there are ways to relieve gas in an infant.

Instructions

1. Remember to burp your baby. After feeding, place your baby across your lap, or hold him upright and gently pat his back. Continue until he burps.

2. Remove bottle. Don't let your baby fall asleep with or suck on an empty bottle. This causes excess air in the stomach, which can result in gas.

3. Change his formula. Some infants have trouble digesting formula or breast milk. If your baby becomes agitated after feedings, consider a different brand of milk, perhaps soy. Talk with your doctor.

4. Offer water. Give your infant a small amount of water (about one ounce) to help get rid of gas and ease stomach problems such as constipation.

5. Slowly massage stomach. Infant constipation is often associated with gas. Rub your baby's stomach in a circular motion to stimulate bowel activity and help relieve gas and constipation.
