How to Build a Snowboard Fun Box

There are myriad types and sizes of snowboarding obstacles, both natural and man-made. Ski resorts are responding to rising demand for interesting obstacles and terrain by providing snowboard parks for their guests. But you don't need a resort or a terrain park when you can build your own fun box. Some fun boxes have rails to slide, and some have edges to grind. This article will demonstrate how to build a simple fun box with metal edges to grind and slide. Once completed, this fun box will transform any old sledding hill into an exciting place to snowboard.

Instructions

  1. Build the Box

    • 1

Construct the sides of the fun box first. Cut the 8-foot 2x4s into seven 8-inch pieces. Attach the 8-inch pieces as joists to two of the 10-foot 2x4s at about 18 inches on center, creating a rectangular box for the first side. Repeat this step to construct the other side of the box.

    • 2

Turn the two side pieces into a box by framing them together. Cut one 2x4 into 10.5-inch pieces. Use four of these pieces of 2x4 to attach the sides of the box at the inside corners of both ends. Now attach the middle of the sides using the remaining two pieces of 2x4 cut at 10.5 inches.

    • 3

Surface the top and sides of the box using the sheet of plywood. Plywood, even when treated, isn't weather proof. To make the ramp waterproof, add a layer of Skatelite over the plywood. Some people add additional protection to the plywood by adding a layer of tar paper before applying the Skatelite.

    • 4

Add the corner pieces of pipe to each side of the top of the box. Using a special drill bit for metal, punch four holes in the metal corner pieces and countersink them. Attach the corner pieces to both sides of the top of the box.

Tips & Warnings

  • Build ramps out of snow up to the box for bigger tricks.

  • Respect all property laws when looking for a place to use the fun box.

  • Always use proper safety gear when snowboarding.
