How to Reduce Bronchial Irritation

Bronchial irritation can result from illnesses like bronchitis or other respiratory infections, certain health conditions and diseases or smoking. You can take several simple actions to ease this irritation, which include both medication and self-care measures.

      Manage underlying conditions diligently. Conditions like asthma, GERD or COPD can irritate the bronchial airways. Take all prescribed medications as directed and adhere to all of your doctor's instructions regarding self-care and lifestyle recommendations. Taking proper care to manage these problems can reduce bronchial irritation.

      Use steam inhalations to soothe inflamed airways; this is also beneficial if you an illness or other condition producing mucus. You can do this several times a day.

      Thin and expel mucus secretions; they irritate the airways. Avoid cough suppressants if your cough is bringing up mucus, this is also known as a productive cough and will help expel mucus and other irritants from the body. Eat hot foods like hot mustard, horseradish and wasabi. Drink lots of water.
