How to Fasten Composite Decking

Decking can come in two types of materials that include treated wood or composite wood decking. The benefit of using composite wood decking is that it is not affected by weather and is pre-finished, which means it does not need to be painted. Fastening composite decking is that same as using regular wood decking but may require more time to complete the installation. You can fasten composite decking by first making sure you have the composite decking cut the proper length. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Place a piece of composite decking over the joists. Make sure the piece of decking is set flush against the edge of the deck.

    • 2

Drill pilot holes in the piece of decking using a power drill. Make two pilot holes at the location of each joist about 1 ½" to 2" deep.

    • 3

Insert a composite deck screw into the pilot hole and secure it with the power drill. Make sure the screw is flush with the composite decking.

    • 4

Place the second piece of decking over the floor joists so that it is against the initial piece of decking.

    • 5

Repeat steps 2 and 3 to secure the decking to the joists.

    • 6

Continue fastening the composite decking to the joists until you reach the end of the deck.

Tips & Warnings

  • Pre-drilling pilot holes will make securing the screws easier and allow the top of the screw to sit flush with the decking.

  • Over tightening screws may cause the composite decking to crack.
