How to Make a Bait Recipe for Bluegill in Ice Fishing
Ice fishing can be challenging due to frigid weather conditions and difficult angling technique, which involves drilling a hole in ice on a lake. Fortunately, bluegill--a species of panfish--is probably the easiest to catch of all freshwater fish. Bluegill will attack and devour almost anything they can get in their mouths, but certain tastes and textures work better than others. With homemade bluegill bait balls, an angler can soon catch his daily limit.
Things You'll Need
- 1/2 cup flour
- Water
- Spoon
- Powdered Parmesan cheese
- Microwave-safe bowl
- Resealable plastic bags
Instructions

1
Pour 1/2 cup flour into a mixing bowl. Stir while slowly adding just enough water to form dough.
-
2
Add 2 tbsp. of powdered Parmesan cheese to the dough, and mix thoroughly. Powdered cheese is better than freshly grated cheese because the powdered form dissolves more quickly and will attract bluegills faster.
-
-
3
Place the bowl in a microwave, and heat on the highest setting for 30 seconds.
-
4
Check the consistency of the dough, which should feel rubbery. The dough should not stick to the fingertips or leave residue when touched. Microwave for another 15 seconds if necessary.
-
5
Form the dough into balls about the size of marbles.
-
6
Place the dough balls in a resealable plastic bag, and freeze until ready for fishing.
-
7
Bait a size 1/0 or 2/0 hook with a single dough ball. The barb should be buried in the bait to encourage the fish to consume the entire dough ball.
