Decide on the style of skates you want for your child. For instance, do you want the brake in the front or back of the shoe? Will the skate have laces or straps? Knowing the kind of skates your child needs reduces some of the size offerings and fit design.

Start by measuring the child's foot with his or her socks on. Start at the heel and measure to the tip of the foot. Write down this measurement. Next, measure the opposite foot using the same heel-to-toe technique (If you come up with a larger measurement, use it instead of the previous one). This measurement will give you the length needed to make sure you get the correct skate.

Take these measurements with you to whatever retailer you use to purchase skates. It's best to bring the child with you to the store to help you better assess the actual fitting of the skates.
