How to Replace the Door Switch on a Dishwasher
The modern dishwasher washes, rinses and dries your dishes, pots and pans, and utensils automatically, saving you a ton of time. However, dishwashers have many mechanical and electrical parts that may go bad over years of use. If your dishwasher will not turn on, the door switch has probably gone bad. The door switch shuts the dishwasher off automatically when the door is opened at any time during a cycle. Turn off the power to the dishwasher by unplugging the power cord at the electrical receptacle underneath the kitchen sink cabinet or by turning off the circuit breaker at the main electrical box.

Open the door to the dishwasher and remove the inner panel by turning out the stainless steel screws at the outer edge of the panel with a Philips screwdriver in a counterclockwise direction.

Locate the door switch by checking near the door's handle. Remove any additional panels covering the switch by removing the holding clips with a pair of pliers or by backing out the screws with a Philips screwdriver in a counterclockwise direction.

Remove the wiring harness from the switch by pressing in on the plastic tab on the harness while pulling the wiring connector apart by hand. Remove the switch by backing out the holding screws with a Philips screwdriver in a counterclockwise direction or by removing the clips with a pair of pliers.

Install the new switch by twisting in the holding screws in a clockwise direction with a Philips screwdriver or replace the clips with a pair of pliers. Push the wiring harness connector into the new switch until the tab snaps into place. Replace the switch cover and attach the clips with a pair of pliers or turn the screws with a Philips screwdriver in a clockwise direction.

Replace the inner panel on the dishwasher door. Turn in the holding screws finger tight. Finish tightening the screws with a Philips screwdriver in a clockwise direction. Close the dishwasher door. Plug the power cord back in or turn on the circuit breaker at the electrical box. Test the dishwasher by turning it on and letting it run a full cycle.

Tips & Warnings
When removing the inner panel of the dishwasher door, do not remove the hinge screws along the bottom edge of the panel. Only the screws along the top and sides of the panel need to be backed out to remove the panel.
