Building your own laundry sorter can be less expensive than buying one. You can also customize your sorter to fit in a specific area, or have more or fewer places to sort your dirty clothes. Laundry sorters come in handy to separate white, dark and bright colored clothing. They can also be used to separate each family member's clothing. The sorter keeps your laundry room neat and organized and makes doing laundry a cinch. Does this Spark an idea?

Things You'll Need

  • Measuring tape
  • 1 24-inch length two by four wood
  • 4 hooks
  • Level
  • Wood glue
  • Hammer
  • Nails
  • Stud finder
  • Pencil
  • Drill
  • Sandpaper
  • Paint
  • Laundry bags
  • Labels

Instructions

      Locate an open wall in the area where you would like your sorter to be. You will need a wall space measuring 2 feet across by 4 feet high.

      Sand, prime and paint the two by four if you would like it to be a certain color.

      Attach the hooks to the two by four. They should be evenly spaced across the board, or roughly 6 inches apart. Depending on the type of hooks you have, they will be attached in different ways. You may need to drill a hole in the board and then screw the hooks into it, you may need to adhere the hooks using glue, or you may need to simply screw them into the board using a screwdriver.

      Mount the board to the wall. Use a level to make sure the board is straight. The board should be at least 4 feet off the ground. Nail it into the wall using a hammer and nails. Be sure to locate studs before mounting the board by using a stud finder.

      Hang a laundry bag from each hook. Above each hook, attach a label to indicate what type of laundry goes in each bag.
