How to Replace Treble Hooks With Single Hooks
Treble hooks are preferred by many fisherman because they are more effective at hooking the fish and keeping it hooked until you can reel it in. On the other hand, many other fisherman prefer single hooks because they do less damage to the fish, which is especially important when you only want to catch and release. Another reason to use single hooks is that they're less likely to get hung up in grass and debris in the water. If you prefer a single hook, you can easily replace your treble hook with a single one by following a few simple steps.
Instructions
-
Method 1
-
1
Hold the treble hook securely in your nondominant hand.
-
2
Use your dominant hand to snip off two of the three barbs on the treble hook. You can do this easily with a pair of side-cutting pliers.
-
-
3
Inspect the hook to make sure that the two barbs you removed are well-cut and don't have any remaining parts sticking off from the hook.
Method 2
-
4
Hold the lure securely in your nondominant hand.
-
5
Grip the side-cutting pliers in your dominant hand and pry the split ring open. The split ring is the small metal loop that attaches most treble hooks to the lure.
-
6
Remove the treble hook carefully and replace it with a single hook.
-
7
Use the pliers to clamp the split ring back together in order to secure the single hook.
