How to String a Shakespeare Spinner Fishing Rod

Explore America's Campgrounds

Spinning rods are one of the most common types of rods, and the Shakespeare company manufactures the spinner rods that many anglers use. But like all varieties of fishing rods, Shakespeare spinning rods are of little use unless they are strung with fishing line. While it might be easier to have a friend help in the process, most fishermen can put line onto their rods and reels by themselves once they are comfortable with the process. So if they're fishing alone and need to replace their fishing line, they can do it.

Items you will need

  • Shakespeare spinner rod

  • Spinning reel

  • Fishing line

  • Scissors

Ensure the Shakespeare spinner rod is attached to a spinning fishing reel.

Remove the small piece of tape that secures the end of the fishing line to the spool on which it came.

Grasp the end of the fishing line between your thumb and index finger and thread the line through the rod guide at the tip of the rod. Thread the line through each of the rod guides until you are at the spinning reel.

Open the bale of the spinning reel by flipping it up.

Wrap the line around the spool of the reel two times. Then tie a knot so the line fits snugly against the spool.

Trim excess fishing line above the knot using scissors. Be careful to leave about 1/8 inch of line, which will help ensure the knot will not fall apart if it slips slightly.

Spin the handle of the spinning reel as if you were reeling in a fish. Continue spinning it until the fishing line is 1/8 inch below the rim of the reel spool.

Snip the fishing line so that about 12 inches hang beyond the tip of the rod.
