How to Treat Cedar Wood

Save

Cedar is a versatile wood with a deep amber color. Because cedar is weather-resistant, it's a great option for many outdoor projects. Cedar has a unique smell, which sets it apart from many other types of wood. The rich aroma of fresh cedar makes it a popular choice for interior projects as well, such as cedar cabinets and chests. If you love your cedar furniture and want to be sure it lasts as long as it possibly can, there are steps you can take to care for it and extend its life.

Things You'll Need

  • Weather stripping
  • Pure cedar oil extract
  • 60-grit sandpaper
  • Oil-based stain, clear or colored
  • Seal all cedar cabinets, drawers and other items with weather stripping or other sealant to protect the inside of the furniture from air, which can shorten cedar’s lifespan.

  • Sand your cedar wood lightly with 60-grit sandpaper. Natural cedar has a bright, red color, which fades over time. When the red color returns, you've sanded enough. This sanding also restores the aroma of your cedar wood.

  • Rub the cedar wood with a pure cedar oil extract to infuse the cedar scent back into the wood. This is a good alternative to keep your cedar smelling wonderful in between sanding, should the aroma begin to fade.

  • Coat Western Red Cedar with an oil-based stain, either clear or colored. Western Red Cedar takes very well to oil-based stains, adding another alternative for finishing your cedar products.
